Mephentermine dependence induced psychosis: A case report and a review of literature

Abstract

Mephentermine, related to amphetamines, has been used to enhance performance in competitive sports and by persons involved in body building. There has been limited literature available on management of mephentermine dependence. Here, we describe a case of mephentermine dependence and induced psychosis followed by review of literature and a discussion about management. A 29 years old male, currently unemployed, previously working as a salesman presented with intravenous mephentermine use and development of dependence along with onset of psychotic symptoms. There was comorbid alcohol and tobacco dependence. The patient showed improvement with olanzapine and valproate. The present report highlights the need to explore effective treatment options for individuals who have mephentermine dependence along with associated comorbid psychiatric disorder.
