Abstract

Fathers are prone to experiencing difficulties bonding with their preterm infants, yet little is known about the associated factors. In this study, we examine the roles played by four of these factors (uncertainty, hope, nursing support, and bonding) for fathers of preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units. Employing a cross-sectional design, we recruited 396 fathers from across the United States (September 2022–January 2023) and collected online survey data from them with reliable, valid instruments. Using a moderated-mediation analysis, we analyzed the data and found that uncertainty negatively influenced bonding while hope partially mediated the negative effects of uncertainty on bonding.
Higher levels of nursing support lessened the negative effects of uncertainty on bonding in the presence of hope and generally contributed to higher levels of bonding. These findings suggest that neonatal nurses can facilitate fathers’ bonding with their preterm infants, especially by minimizing uncertainty and boosting hope in fathers.
