This study examines the status of serviced residences for the elderly in Japan and makes suggestions for housing the elderly in Korea. This study was performed by reviewing the literature and materials published by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. In Japan, the Act of 'Securement of a Stable Supply of Housing for Elderly Individuals' and the Act regarding 'The Offering of Rental Housing to Persons Requiring Special Assistance to Secure Housing' were enacted to implement policies intended to secure stable housing an d daily living support for elderly and individuals with disabilities. Standards for serviced residences for the elderly are being established, and related information is available on the Internet. The implications of the results of this study are as follows. First, legal standards and requirements for the installation and operation of serviced residences for Korean elderly should be established. Second, jobs and employment opportunities tailored for the elderly should be created.
