Abstract. DEM simulations by Chialvo et al. observed three distinct flow regimes for homogeneous simple shear of soft, frictional, noncohesive spheres in different domains of shear rate and density. This paper shows that all three regimes can be accommodated in a continuum description, using the CIDR formalism.
