Three large-spored Metschnikowia species, M. amazonensis, M. continentalis, and M. matae, were examined. Although filamentous Ascomycetes may produce structures that are interpreted as male and female gametangia, ascomycetous yeasts are generally not considered to possess male and female sexes.
