Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with high prevalence and a significant impact on quality of life, associated with multiple comorbidities, both atopic and non-atopic. There has been a recent increase in efforts to understand the relationship between AD and this broad spectrum of comorbidities, with a notable emphasis on psychiatric conditions due to their substantial impact on quality of life. Patients with AD appear to have an increased risk of experiencing depression and anxiety, among other mental health disorders, with this risk being higher as the severity of AD increases. While in some cases, this could be explained by the presence of certain proinflammatory cytokines capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, in the majority of cases, other factors are likely involved, such as chronic itch or sleep disorders. The objective of this review is to present the most relevant recent evidence regarding the relationship between AD and psychiatric disorders.
