Abstract
In order to improve the fragile ecological environment, the Loess Plateau region of China has implemented a large number of long-term forest vegetation restoration projects. Infiltration, as an important part of the hydrological cycle, is also changing with vegetation restoration, and a comprehensive study of these changes is an essential aspect of evaluating the effectiveness of vegetation restoration. In the study, three typical forest vegetation types in the Loess Plateau were selected to investigate and analyse infiltration characteristics and infiltration patterns by staining tracer experiments. The results showed that (1) vegetation restoration increased the extend and depth of infiltration. (2) The extent of infiltration in mixed plantation forest of Pinus tabulaeformis and Robinia pseudoacacia was better than that in pure Pinus tabulaeformis plantation forest. (3) Vegetation restoration resulted in more pronounced preferential flow phenomenon in the infiltration processes. (4) The preferential flow phenomenon was more pronounced in the natural secondary forest than in plantation forests, especially if the amount of infiltrated water was low. (5) The extent of infiltration was mainly influenced by the infiltration water volume, soil water content, and total soil porosity; and the degree of preferential flow development was mainly influenced by the infiltration water volume, soil organic matter, and root distribution. At present, vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau can play a role in promoting precipitation infiltration, and mixed-mode afforestation is better than single-dominant-species afforestation to fulfil this function of forests.

Catena publishes papers describing original field and laboratory investigations and reviews on geoecology and landscape evolution with emphasis on interdisciplinary aspects of soil science, hydrology and geomorphology. It aims to disseminate new knowledge and foster better understanding of the physical environment, of evolutionary sequences that have resulted in past and current landscapes, and of the natural processes that are likely to determine the fate of our terrestrial environment.
Papers within any one of the above topics are welcome provided they are of sufficiently wide interest and relevance.
