Abstract

This study evaluated Florida Nurses Association members' healthcare board competencies using the SHIP-BC© instrument, aiming to support national efforts in appointing competent nurses to organizational boards. Results from a quantitative survey (n = 238) reveal high competency levels among nurses. Qualitative feedback underscores nurses' crucial role, advocating for patients and communities and enhancing healthcare governance. Findings emphasize the need for nursing education and leadership development to prepare nurses for effective board participation. Future research should explore long-term impacts and strategies to address challenges. Overall, nurses on healthcare boards contribute significantly to improving healthcare access, affordability, and equity.
