Abstract

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been commonly used to treat osteoarthritis and joint injuries in horses and dogs since the 1970s. HA is a polysaccharide made up of alternating N-acetyl-d-glucosamine and d-glucuronic acid residues, with polymeric molecules achieving molecular weights as high as 20 MDa.
