Abstract

This review addresses the role of childhood experiences in the development of paraphilias, a topic insufficiently explored in current research. It proposes the examination of the influence of attachment styles and boundary-setting with parents and caregivers on the onset of paraphilic behaviors, as highlighted in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). By broadening the scope of research on the etiology of paraphilias, this review aims to identify a wider range of causal factors, ultimately aiding in the creation of more accurate treatment plans. Key studies reviewed include "Childhood Abuse and Sadomasochism" by Abrams et al. (2022) and "The Impact of Childhood Trauma, Personality, and Sexuality on the Development of Paraphilias" by Longpré et al. (2022). KEYWORDS: Paraphilias, DSM, Childhood abuse, Parenting styles, Boundaries
