Abstract
Introduction
Leishmaniasis is a complex of tropical infectious diseases, which the incidence is increasing in Ecuador, the most frequent presentation in our country is the cutaneous form. The study aims to describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of cutaneous leishmaniasis in patients who attended our center.
Methodology
The recent study was observed in a second level hospital in the city of Quito, Ecuador, it included patients with a diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis who were treated between October 1, 2015 and July 31, 2023.
Results
44 patients were studied with an average age of 33 years, with a predominance of males in 64%, 97% corresponded to new cases. Multiple lesions were presented in 52% of the cases and 48% had single lesions. The size of 2 to 3 cm predominated in 26% of the cases. 75% of the patients received treatment with intravenous meglumine antimoniate, 25% of the cases received intralesional treatment. After 90 days, 82% of the cases were cured, the remaining 18% required therapies based on oral antifungals.
Conclusions
In our reports, multiple injuries and in the exposed areas of the body were more frequent. We must consider oral antifungals and intralesional administration of meglumine antimoniate as effective alternatives in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
