Here we show that a class of GABAergic inhibitory interneurons that express vasoactive intestinal peptide-expressing interneurons (VIP), namely VIP interneurons, play a key role in the circuits involved in the modulation of cortical activity by behavioral state, as reflected in the mice facial motion. We show that inhibition of VIP interneurons reduces the correlated activity between the behavioral state of the animal and the spiking of individual neurons. We also show that VIP inhibition during the quiet state decreases the synchronous spiking of the neurons but increases delta power and phase locking of spiking to the delta-band activity.
