Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterial species that is commonly found colonising healthy individuals but that presents a paradoxical nature: simultaneously, it can migrate within the body and cause a range of diseases. Many of these become chronic by resisting immune responses, antimicrobial treatment, and medical intervention. In part, this ability to persist can be attributed to the adoption of multiple cell types within a single cellular population.
