Abstract

This introduction to the special issue on ‘The Public Archaeology of Working Class Communities’ situates the articles included in this issue within the broader context of identity-based public and community archaeology efforts. Despite being part of the gender-race-class classical triad of identity, class has been repeatedly overlooked as it’s own area of focus within community engagement and public archaeology. This introduction calls for public archaeologists to more thoroughly consider their engagement strategies with working class communities in order to ensure our projects capture the intersectionality of our stakeholder and descendant populations. Finally, the articles in this issue are examined as case studies that are already highlighting some thematic trends within working class public engagements.

Archaeologies: Journal of the World Archaeological Congress offers a venue for debates and topical issues, through peer-reviewed articles, reports and reviews. It emphasizes contributions that seek to recenter (or decenter) archaeology, and that challenge local and global power geometries. Areas of interest include ethics and archaeology; public archaeology; legacies of colonialism and nationalism within the discipline; the interplay of local and global archaeological traditions; theory and archaeology; the discipline’s involvement in projects of memory, identity, and restitution; and rights and ethics relating to cultural property, issues of acquisition, custodianship, conservation, and display. Recognizing the importance of non-Western epistemologies and intellectual traditions, the journal publishes some material in nonstandard format, including dialogues; annotated photographic essays; transcripts of public events; and statements from elders, custodians, descent groups and individuals.
