Abstract

Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are mechanical miners that are preferred over conventional drilling and blasting methods for drilling / excavating vertical or inclined shafts in mining and construction projects. The use of RBMs not only reduces overall operational costs but also increases profitability. This review paper aims to present empirical, deterministic, and numerical models that are used to predict operational and performance parameters of RBMs. The paper also highlights the major challenges faced during raise boring operations and offers recommendations for addressing them. Lastly, the paper discusses important trends in the design of tricone bits and reamerhead cutters for RBMs.

期刊介绍: Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology is an international journal which publishes authoritative articles encompassing the development of innovative uses of underground space and the results of high quality research into improved, more cost-effective techniques for the planning, geo-investigation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of underground and earth-sheltered structures. The journal provides an effective vehicle for the improved worldwide exchange of information on developments in underground technology - and the experience gained from its use - and is strongly committed to publishing papers on the interdisciplinary aspects of creating, planning, and regulating underground space.
