Abstract

This letter proposes a novel method to extract single-mode feedback signals using a modal eigenvalue realignment (MER) based approach. The single-mode feedback signals those contain information pertinent to the concerned modes are selected, while states with minimal participation are disregarded. These signals are utilized as supplementary inputs to high-voltage direct current (HVDC) tie-line converter and exciters of synchronous generators (SGs) aiming to enhance the damping of inter-area modes (IAMs) of oscillation. The proposed method is thoroughly evaluated and validated using a 25-machine, 105-bus Eastern Regional (ER) truncated power system of India, and further verified through real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation.
