Academic Leaders Should Encourage Good Citizenship

Abstract

One of the main goals of education, particularly higher education, is to help students become engaged and productive citizens. What does it mean to be a “productive” citizen? To me, a productive citizen is gainfully employed, pays taxes, votes on a regular basis, respects and follows the law, participates in community activities, establishes and raises families, is neighborly, and treats others as they want to be treated.
