Abstract

Poly(ester amide) (PEA) has been profoundly used in the coating industry owing to its chemical resistance, water vapor resistance, and excellent physio-mechanical properties. The core source of synthesizing PEA coatings is via the conversion of oils (edible and non-edible) to fatty amide followed by reactions with dicarboxylic acids. The resultant coatings show enhanced drying time, improved crystallization, and low water absorption due to integration with dual properties of both amide and ester groups. Furthermore, plain PEA based coatings are also modified with various nanofillers, reactants, and other metal composites to enhance their chemical and mechanical properties. The present paper provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis pathways of PEA coatings across a broad spectrum of applications. We have also elucidated the newly developed synthesis pathways for waterborne and biodegradable PEA-based coatings. In addition to describing novel UV-curing applications, the critical properties highlighted in various application areas include anti-corrosivity, chemical resistance, anti-microbial, and flame retardancy.

期刊介绍: "Polymer Bulletin" is a comprehensive academic journal on polymer science founded in 1988. It was founded under the initiative of the late Mr. Wang Baoren, a famous Chinese chemist and educator. This journal is co-sponsored by the Chinese Chemical Society, the Institute of Chemistry, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is supervised by the China Association for Science and Technology. It is a core journal and is publicly distributed at home and abroad. "Polymer Bulletin" is a monthly magazine with multiple columns, including a project application guide, outlook, review, research papers, highlight reviews, polymer education and teaching, information sharing, interviews, polymer science popularization, etc. The journal is included in the CSCD Chinese Science Citation Database. It serves as the source journal for Chinese scientific and technological paper statistics and the source journal of Peking University's "Overview of Chinese Core Journals."
