Abstract
Twenty-two compounds, predominantly catechin, taxifolin, and proanthocyanidin derivatives, were isolated and characterized from the methanol extract of Entada elephantina tuberous rhizomes. Five taxifolin-based metabolites, elephantinosides A-E (1-5) and one proanthocyanidin, elephantinoside F (19), were previously undescribed. Their structures were elucidated primarily based on 1D- and 2D-NMR and HRESIMS data. The absolute configuration of isolates was determined via NOESY NMR technique and experimental and calculated ECD analyses. None of the tested compounds 3-6, 8-10, 13-17, and 19 exhibited antimicrobial activity against a panel of bacterial and fungal strains.

Fitoterapia is a Journal dedicated to medicinal plants and to bioactive natural products of plant origin. It publishes original contributions in seven major areas:
1. Characterization of active ingredients of medicinal plants
2. Development of standardization method for bioactive plant extracts and natural products
3. Identification of bioactivity in plant extracts
4. Identification of targets and mechanism of activity of plant extracts
5. Production and genomic characterization of medicinal plants biomass
6. Chemistry and biochemistry of bioactive natural products of plant origin
7. Critical reviews of the historical, clinical and legal status of medicinal plants, and accounts on topical issues.
