Abstract
Highly oxidized natural products (HONPs) are characterized by their remarkable structural complexity, which underpins a wide range of bioactivities and makes them valuable sources of pharmaceutical agents. HONPs are tentatively classified as highly oxidized compounds if the ratio of oxygen to all heavy atoms exceeds 21%—a threshold inspired by the oxygen content in Earth's atmosphere. Their high oxidation state is reflected in the presence of multiple oxygen-containing functional groups, such as hydroxyl groups, carbonyl groups, and epoxides, which are usually formidable to construct selectively. In recent years, substantial advancements have been made in the total synthesis of HONPs, driven by the emergence of innovative strategies and sophisticated methodologies. More details are discussed in the article by Qi et al. on pages 650—714.
