Abstract
Nearly half of pregnant women are unvaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap), with lower rates among those who may have challenges related to social determinants of health. To increase Tdap vaccination rates for pregnant women from 27 to 36 weeks’ gestation, Pender’s Health Belief Model guided this quality improvement project. Conducted at 2 private clinics located in small urban areas, on-site vaccination was not offered. Staff education, patient referral, and documentation of vaccination status fostered acceptance of Tdap vaccination, particularly for those at risk for racial disparity. Documentation of Tdap vaccination status improved with awareness, reminders for patient discussion, and documentation alerts.
