Abstract

Introduction

Periorbital malignant tumors are of particular concern for functional and esthetic reasons. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is considered the choice for the treatment of periorbital carcinomas since it has the advantage of controlling 100% of the tumor margins, achieving the best cure rates and the greatest preservation of healthy tissue (important for the scarcity of redundant tissue in this region). The objective of this work is the descriptive analysis of patients with periorbital carcinomas treated with MMS in our service over a period of 10 years.

Patients and method

Retrospective analysis of all patients operated with MMS in the periorbital region in the Dermatological Surgery Unit from 2013 to 2022, where clinical, tumor and surgical variables were obtained.

Results

In the periorbital region, 52 MMS were performed in 44 patients; 26 (59.1%) of the patients were women. The average age was 64.2 years. Basal cell carcinomas represented 84.6% of the treated carcinomas. The most frequent location was the lower eyelid. Simple closure was the most used reconstruction method. The most frequent compilation observed was cicatricial ectropion at 11.5%.

Conclusions

The results obtained in this study agree with those published from other centers. MMS continues to be used successfully in the management of periorbital tumors. The preservation of healthy tissue in MMS allows the size of the defect to be minimized, allowing the preservation of important structures, functionality and achieving good esthetic results.
