Abstract

To enhance the understanding of patient needs regarding the therapeutic relationship in the treatment of schizophrenia. We conducted semi-structured interviews (n=31) with people diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, their relatives, peer support workers, and experts by experience, followed by qualitative content analysis.Central needs regarding the therapeutic relationship include professionals adopting an approachable and authentic attitude, demonstrating an appreciative attitude where patients feel taken seriously, and collaboratively developing realistic perspectives on life.Structural conditions should enable and promote a respectful relationship between patients and professionals. Disclosure of own crisis experiences by professionals can further contribute to building a trusting relationship.
