Abstract

Introduction: This report discusses a 79-year-old patient with coxarthrosis and atrial fibrillation who underwent elective implantation of a hip pros-thesis. Postoperatively, after a symptom-free interval, the patient presented with disorientation, slowness, dysarthria and hemisymptomatic symptoms. Together with imaging showing multiple punctate ischemic lesions and microbleeds in the brain, a diagnosis of fat embolism was made. This case emphasizes the importance of considering fat embolism especially after orthopaedic surgery in patients with postoperative neurological symptoms.
