A relatively non-toxic thrombogenic diet for rats

Abstract

Rats were fed either a basal high-fat diet containing, among other ingredients, 5 % cholesterol and 0.3 % propylthiouracil or one of four modifications of the diet containing lesser amounts of these two ingredients. It was found that the amounts of dietary cholesterol and propylthiouracil could be reduced to at least 1 % and 0.02 %, respectively, without decreasing the incidence of cardiac thrombi and infarcts, but the high mortality seen during the first month when animals were given the basal diet, was abolished.
