Abstract

During myogenesis, precursor cells irreversibly withdraw from the cell cycle as they differentiate into mature myotubes. The state of myocyte differentiation also influences the propensity of these cells to undergo apoptosis. Proliferative precursor cells are far more susceptible to apoptotic cell death than are terminally differentiated myotubes.
