It serves as cellular hypoxia sensor and plays a critical role in physiologic processes including glucose metabolism, iron metabolism, erythropoiesis, angiogenesis, cell survival and apoptosis, but also, pathologic processes such as carcinogenesis, progression and metastasis of many cancers.
