Influence of sleep bruxism severity on masticatory efficiency: electromyographic analysis.

The linear envelope integral was used to determine masticatory efficiency on the basis of the electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporalis muscles during habitual and non-habitual chewing. There was significantly higher (p .05) electromyographic activity in the severe bruxism group than in the mild bruxism group during both peanut chewing in the right (p = .03) and left (p = .03) temporalis muscles and raisin chewing in the right (p = .01) and left (p = .05) temporalis muscles. Furthermore, Parafilm M chewing showed similar results in the right (p = .008) and left (p = .02) temporalis muscles.
