Abstract

A new species of Aulacoseira Thwaites is described from sediment deposits of Surprise Lake, an isolated lake located in the New Jersey Highlands. The species is characterized by (1) a low mantle, (2) unevenly distributed mantle areolae of variable size and shape, and (3) a valve face covered by rounded areolae. The new species is most similar to Aulacoseira biseriata (Grunow in Van Heurk) Houk, R. Klee & H. Tanaka. Both taxa possess frustules with mantles that are low, with irregular pervalvar rows or scattered areolae. However, the two species differ in the shape and pattern of the areolae, the shape and structure of the mantle wall, the shape and depth of the ringleist, and other morphological features. In this study, we present light and scanning electron microscopic images of the new species and compare it to the most similar taxa.

该新物种与Aulacoseira biseriata(Van Heurk的Grunow)Houk、R.Klee和H.Tanaka最为相似。

Diatom Research is the journal of the International Society for Diatom Research. The journal is published quarterly, in March, June, September and December, and welcomes manuscripts on any aspect of diatom biology. In addition to full-length papers, short notes and reviews of recent literature are published which need not contain all the sections required for full-length papers; we see these as being necessary to record information which is of interest but which cannot be followed up in detail. Discursive “Opinion” papers are encouraged which would not necessarily follow the normal lay-out. If extremely long papers are to be offered, the author(s) should contact the editors first to discuss any problems. Book reviews, obituaries and meeting reports can be published. All papers will be subject to critical review by the editors and referees, as appropriate to their content. Papers will be accepted in English only.
