MITAS, DESPLAZAMIENTOS Y MIGRACIONES DE LA POBLACIÓN INDÍGENA EN LOS CORREGIMIENTOS DE HUAYLAS Y CONCHUCOS EN EL ÚLTIMO TERCIO DEL SIGLO XVI

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to ponder about the importance and magnitute of the mita system as well as to evaluate its relationship with seasonal and permanent indigenous migration. The area of study is the corregimientos of Conchucos and Huaylas, located in the norcentral area of viceroyal of Peru, during the last third of the sixteenth century. The analysis of census, fiscal and labor criteria used in the Arbishop Mogrovejo´s second visit, allows to establish the huge variety of labor conditions of the population related to displacement and migration patterns that differ from those established by viceroy Toledo in 1570s, when he relocated Indians in special towns with the intention to permit only displacements labor destinarions, such as their labor turns (mitas). However, censal and fiscal information shows that the model did nnot work almost since its inception.
