Spinal nociceptive neurons are rendered hyperexcitable with the support of microglial cells, the immune cells of the central nervous system. The so-elicited sensitization of pain pathways has a strong impact on pain processing in the brain. On the other hand, immune processes are regulated by the nervous system. Abstract

Abstract Interactions of the immune system and the nociceptive system play an important role in the generation and maintenance of pain in musculoskeletal diseases and in disease development.
