Abstract

Abstract Given the lack of data-literate talent in business organizations, there is a need to develop more effective data literacy education at university level. With the aim of informing improvement, a systematic, quantitative literature review of data literacy education was undertaken. The review of 71 articles revealed that data literacy education predominantly relies on existing learning theories and teaching strategies, lacks empirical studies, and lacks agreement about what competencies constitute data literacy. These findings highlight the need for empirical research to establish what needs to be taught and how it can be best taught.
