Abstract This paper presents the results of a research aimed to analyze historiographic and ethnological works on the Mapuche society, in perspective of the construction of a historical-social imaginary that promoted the configuration of the Araucanian as “other” and, in whose dissemination the historical teaching participated, through the recreation of the discourses proposed by the school manuals. The study was developed based on a methodology of historical-documentary nature and its contribution to social knowledge lies in the association between the historical thinking and teaching. The research shows how the imaginary of the other is constructed, based on positivist / evolutionary scientific and historiographic assumptions, relegating “the Araucanian race” to an initial state of human evolution.
