Abstract

Digitalisation and the spread of technological innovation have revolutionised the retail sector. In recent years, a new trend has emerged in the form of checkout-free stores, pioneered by Amazon Go. It has replaced human intervention by using cameras, sensors and self-organising shelves. Several start-ups have now developed the technology. This paper focuses on retail out-lets that have adopted this innovation. It provides a literature review on the interpretation of the concept, a brief history and its diffusion. The phenomenon has spread mainly globally
