“Paliar el atraso”. Tuluá, una ciudad progresista: 1910-1940

Abstract

La llegada del siglo XX en Tulua genero importantes transformaciones urbanas que impactaron la manera como se administro la ciudad, la construccion de la infraestructura urbana, el control social de sus habitantes y la vida urbana en general. Para alcanzar esto, y al mismo tiempo como su consecuencia, las elites locales impusieron un modelo de ciudad progresista que busco formar un hombre “culto y civilizado”, fomentar el desarrollo agropecuario y comercial, construir una infraestructura de ciudad moderna y confortable, embellecer la ciudad, imponer condiciones de higiene y salubridad, y transformar las practicas “incivilizadas”. The 20th century brought important urban transformations to Tulua, which impacted on the way the city was administrated, the construction of the urban infrastructure, the social control of its inhabitants and the urban life itself. To obtain this, and at the same time its consequence, local elites imposed a progressive city model that tried to educate civilized people, to encourage agricultural and commercial development, to build a modern city and comfortable infrastructure, to embellish the city, to impose hygiene and health conditions, and to eradicate uncivilized practices.
