Given the increasing need for people who can create and use metadata competently, this is a timely update. This book provides not only a solid grounding in the basics for students but a useful resource for experienced information professionals, who are being constantly bombarded by new technologies, standards, and systems. This is probably not a book that you will read in a linear fashion, and the clearly labelled chapters and comprehensive index provide excellent metadata within the book that can be used to dip into areas of interest.
