(1) showed that a deficiency of surface-active material (surfactant) may be significant in the pathogenesis of hyaline membrane disease in preterm infants. Exogenous surfactant was first used in Respiratory Distress syndrome (RDS) treatment by Fujiwara et al. (2) in 1980.
