Research has revealed that the wreck seems clearly situated in the 18th-century network of colonial navigation towards the American east coast, for which archaeological remains are still few and far between. Abstract
The Baleineaux 3 wreck site off western France lies in an area that is stirred up every day by strong currents at the tides’ turns and hit by storms. From this tragic shipwreck, which took place at the foot of the lighthouse, remain cannons, burnt fragments and vestiges scattered over 70 acres of a rocky seabed and an underwater canyon. Research has revealed that the wreck seems clearly situated in the 18th-century network of colonial navigation towards the American east coast, for which archaeological remains are still few and far between. This article reviews the archaeological campaigns, the main discoveries and advances in maritime archaeology.
