Donne in viaggio nel Medioevo

Abstract

Le fonti medievali raccontano le numerose esperienze di viaggio di regine, principesse e dame dell’aristocrazia, sante, badesse e monache che si spostavano in terre lontane per raggiungere i loro promessi sposi, o per recarsi in pellegrinaggio presso i luoghi santi piu famosi in Occidente cosi come in Oriente, talvolta addirittura al seguito delle truppe crociate, e cosi via. L’esame di tali documenti dimostra che molte furono protagoniste consapevoli delle loro avventure, pronte ad affrontare lunghi e duri cammini per portare a compimento i loro progetti, ma conferma, nel contempo, il ruolo secondario di tante altre, asservite come fossero delle pedine alla volonta degli uomini – padri, mariti, fratelli… – che ne decidevano il destino. Medieval sources tell the numerous travel experiences of queens, princesses andnoble dames, saints, prioresses and nuns who travelled to distant lands either to reach their betrothed or to go on pilgrimage to the most famous holy places in the West as well as in the East, sometimes even following the Crusade armies, and so forth. The study of such documents shows that many of them were aware of their adventures, ready to face a long and hard journey to fulfil their plans, but it confirms, at the same time, the secondary role of many more of them, subdued as pawns to the will of men – their fathers, husbands
