Chinese nursing postgraduates’ views on implementing outcome-oriented academic English course: a descriptive study

Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze nursing postgraduates’ opinions on learning the outcome-oriented academic English course. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. A total of 150 first-year nursing postgraduates enrolled in the “Academic Professional English for Nursing Postgraduates” course. After completing the course learning, students scanned QR codes generated by the online questionnaire and completed it anonymously within 48 h. Results: The students who participated in this course strongly believed that it “helped them strengthen their English speakability” (4.8 points), “made them more confident to participate in international academic conferences and exchanges in the future” (4.8 points), and “helped them apply English more in the nursing professional field in the future” (4.7 points). Conclusions: The implementation of outcome-oriented course teaching helps students to understand the research of foreign scholars and effectively express their own research content with English as a tool. 摘要背景:根据以往对专业英语课程教学的研究,对课程教学的评价是积极的,但绝大多数都集中在医学英语文献阅读、专业英语词汇和专业英语翻译方面。作为一种选择,在成果导向教育/模式下,基于学术学习需求的课程设计强调提高学生的口头表达、文学阅读、写作和学术交流的综合能力。目的:分析护理专业研究生对学习成果导向型学术英语课程的看法。方法:这是一项横断面描述性研究。共有150名一年级护理研究生参加了“护理研究生学术专业英语”课程。完成课程学习后,学生扫描在线问卷生成的二维码,并在48小时内匿名完成。结果:参加本课程的学生强烈认为这“有助于他们增强英语口语能力”(4.8分),“让他们更有信心将来参加国际学术会议和交流”(4.8分),“帮助他们将来在护理专业领域更多地应用英语”(4.7分)。结论:实施成果导向课程教学有助于学生理解外国学者的研究,并以英语为工具有效地表达自己的研究内容。它激励他们不断地使用英语进行专业和学术交流。
