Abstract
Abstract:Austria-Hungary is not commonly considered a proper colonial power. Nevertheless, it actively participated in the imperialistic trend permeating European societies and states in the late nineteenth century. After the Petz expedition (1867–1869), it obtains the tools of informal imperialism in China. A proper Chinese policy only takes shape however under the mandate at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Count Agenor Gołuchowski, thus allowing for the creation of the sole overseas colony of the dual monarchy: the Austro-Hungarian concession of Tianjin (1900–1917).
