Abstract
Moldovan legislative elections in July 2021 brought to power a political party – the Party of Action and Solidarity – that favours closer relations with the European Union and with the country's neighbours, Romania and Ukraine, in part to gain leverage in managing Moldova’s complex relationship with Russia. However, this may persuade Moscow to both raise barriers to further cooperation with Chișinău on trade and energy issues and to increase its support for the separatist regime in Transnistria.
