Abstract

The article deals with ideals of school leadership on the basis of analyses of central books which has been published during the last 40-50 years. Through a comparative and hermeneutic inspired approach different ideals of school leadership are identified. The analyses point to that the ideal of school leadership has changed from an ideal where the school leader is an experienced “craftsman” to an ideal where the school leader is a service leader and at present to an ideal, where the school leader are focusing on research and learning. In the end of the article some of the consequences of the development will be discussed.
