North Korea and the Geopolitics of Development

Abstract

It can hardly be said that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) has lacked academic attention, yet this book identifies a clear gap in our understanding of the challenges that beset the hermit kingdom. From the outset it offers a distinctive approach that enables the exploration of the “co-constitutive” (p. 3) relationship between development and geopolitics. This is a much-needed new analysis of the development situation in North Korea, one that incorporates historical experiences, colonial legacies, socio-cultural insights, and current geopolitical trends, and has the potential to open policy options that have hitherto been unidentified.
