Weinberg and Rolnick, two experienced online therapists, share their world of experience, and insight into this still-novel and exciting form of therapy. Online therapy has been criticized in the past, often by those who have not practiced it themselves. However, the crisis of COVID-19 in 2020 has brought about a remarkable change, because of its necessity for continued treatment. For many therapists (and patients) it has been an important discovery of what online therapy offers. For example, at the AGPA connect conference in February 2021, Dr. Ruthellen Josselson spoke frankly, finding herself stunned to discover that online group therapy sometimes worked even better than in-person or face-to-face (f2f) group therapy—with higher overall attendance, as well. Theory and Practice of Online Therapy provides a strong theoretical and pragmatic guide for therapists and consultants, both to take their practice online and improve the quality of their work. The book is divided into four sections: (1) general considerations for online therapy; (2) online couple and family therapy; (3) online group therapy; and (4) online organizational consultancy. Each section pinpoints the challenges and opportunities of the online application and contains a valuable interview with a hands-on expert of each form of practice. Summaries of research findings, additional personal stories, and relevant clinical examples are offered throughout, making online practices come alive.
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1080/00207284.2021.1921585
