Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to determine the level of readability of online information on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Readability of 100 English-language websites was assessed by five readability measures: Flesch-Kincaid Grade level (FKGL), Gunning Fox Index (GFI), Coleman Liau Index (CLI), Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), and Flesch Reading Ease (FRE). A majority (90%+) of the sample was determined to have unacceptable readability levels, with averages at least one standard deviation away from recommended levels. Not more than a tenth of the websites measured readability to be acceptable or not equivalent to grade seven and above. Results suggest an urgent need for health professionals who create online information related to GDM to revisit and revise the text to be simplified and more readable.

妊娠期糖尿病在线健康信息的可读性分析
摘要本研究旨在确定妊娠期糖尿病(GDM)在线信息的可读性水平。采用Flesch- kincaid Grade level (FKGL)、Gunning Fox Index (GFI)、Coleman Liau Index (CLI)、Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG)和Flesch Reading Ease (FRE)五种可读性指标对100个英语网站的可读性进行了评估。

The Journal of Consumer Health on the Internet is the only professional peer-reviewed journal devoted to locating consumer health information via the Internet. In this journal librarians and health information providers describe programs and services aimed at helping patients and the general public find the health information they need. From the Editor: "Studies have shown that health information is one of the major reasons that people worldwide access the Internet. As the amount of health information on the Web increases exponentially, it becomes critical that librarians-including public and medical librarians-be knowledgeable about what is available online and be able to direct users to reliable, accurate, quality information."
