Abstract

The homeless are a highly visible population in all urban areas of the United States. A large sector of the public, including some elected officials in high places, assume that the homeless are either mentally ill or alcoholic and, in adition, are elderly and poorly educated. Through face-to-face interviews with the homeless of Providence, The Providence Center tested these beliefs about the homeless and in the process identified their service needs.
