2. The Letters

Abstract

My dear Singer: At long last we are all back in America. My family sailed from Genoa at the end of November on an Italian boat and I sailed from Capetown and landed safely in New York on January 4. It was a great worry to me to be separated from my family when the war broke out and you can imagine how happy I am to be reunited with it. Please tell Mrs. Singer how very much we appreciated her kind letters. What a queer war. It seems that nobody has a plan and that nobody knows what he is fighting for. Hitler must be destroyed, that’s obvious but then what? Shall we learn from the past experience or make the same mistakes over again? It seems really hopeless. I found the Institute in very good shape and it was a pleasure to resume my work after such a long interruption but my trip through South Africa was a most interesting experience. This year for the first time in my life I shall not go to Switzerland in the summer. We intend to make a motor trip through the continent and visit a few national parks and other places which we have not seen before. I hope you are all well, as well as one can be under the present circumstances, and I should love to have news from you.
