Abstract

Thirteen Iranian populations of diverse origin (3158 individuals) were analysed for the palmar a-b ridge count and ridge breadth. The distributions of these traits often didn't depart from normality for skewness but were frequently found leptokurtic for kurtosis. The correlation coefficients of the a-b ridge count commonly revealed significant bimanual differences. Sex differences were also found to be significant upon consideration of the left, right and total a-b ridge breadth. The bimanual and sex differences observed may be attributed to developmental differences and exogamy. Tests for interpopulational variation revealed significant heterogeneity for all the traits studied.

AA is an international journal of human biology. It publishes original research papers on all fields of human biological research, that is, on all aspects, theoretical and practical of studies of human variability, including application of molecular methods and their tangents to cultural and social anthropology. Other than research papers, AA invites the submission of case studies, reviews, technical notes and short reports. AA is available online, papers must be submitted online to ensure rapid review and publication.
