Abstract
Cook never gets lost in the astounding wealth of information he provides and, consequently, he wisely guides his readers through the diverse periods of time and through the many sources presented and commented on. In addition, throughout the whole book Cook is problem oriented and his approach methodically sound; his conclusions are careful and straight to the point, but he leaves room for his readers to judge on their own. This fascinating book is a ‘must have’ or ‘must read’ for scholars of early Christianity, but also highly recommended for advanced students and everybody interested in the time of early Christians and their relations with their pagan environment.
